Ask Oji!

What’s KUBOSHUKU like?
ピーちゃん

What’s KUBOSHUKU like?

オカミ

This is a small inn we renovated ourselves from an old, nearly abandoned house that used to be a silkworm farm!
All bedrooms are on the second floor, offering shared dormitory-style rooms and private rooms separated by gender. However, since there are only two rooms, we may not always be able to accommodate requests.
The bath, washroom, and toilet are shared facilities, all located on the first floor. (They’re beyond the stepping stones in the dirt-floored entrance.)
Since it’s a small inn, you might hear other travelers, and the steep stairs to the second-floor bedrooms can be inconvenient. But we’d be delighted if you could relax here like you’re visiting our home or returning to the countryside!

What’s a shared room?
サダキチさん

Oji, what exactly is a shared room?

オジィ

This is a shared dormitory with separate areas for men and women. You’ll be sleeping alongside other guests on futons, not beds.

What’s a private room?
カンロくん

So what exactly is a private room? I think it’s the bathroom.

オジィ

Private rooms are rooms where you won’t be sharing with other guests.
They’re available for solo travelers, couples, and families (though they may not be available during New Year’s, Obon, event days, etc.).
But! Even though they’re called private rooms, they aren’t lockable rooms—they’re just separated by sliding doors, so they might not be ideal for those seeking complete privacy. Eating and drinking in the bedroom is also prohibited.

Is there parking?
サダキチさん

I’d like to go by car, so it’d be a problem if there’s no parking lot.

オジィ

There are three parking spaces within the inn’s grounds, though they are not covered.
For those needing more than three spaces, or who find parking within the inn’s grounds difficult due to limited space, a temporary parking lot is available just a 2-minute walk away.
Please see the link below for details.

What’s the shower room like?
カンロくん

What’s the shower room like?

オジィ

It’s an old house, but the bathroom, washroom, and toilet were
added on later, so while not brand new, it feels pretty modern.
There’s no bathtub—just a shower.
If you want to relax in a bath or during colder months, please visit a hot spring before coming!
Shampoo, conditioner, body soap, and a hairdryer are provided.

Do you have towels and pajamas?
ピーちゃん

Do you have yukata or pajamas?

オジィ

Please bring your own towel, pajamas, toothbrush, etc.! (We do sell toothbrushes though.)

Can you do laundry?
ハルさん

Can you do laundry?

オジィ

Washing machine: ¥200 per load. Detergent: ¥200 per load. No dryer available, but space is provided for hanging laundry to dry.

How’s the heating and cooling?
サダキチさん

I’m not good with heat or cold, but…

オジィ

Summer is cooler here than in Nirasaki city because we’re at an elevation of about 700m! We don’t have air conditioning, but we do have fans. Winter (especially January to February) can be very cold, though it depends on the year and the day.
We can’t recommend it for those who dislike the cold, but the wood stove and irori hearth keep things toasty warm. (Fan heaters are installed in the bedrooms.)
We have hanten coats and chanchanco robes available for you to use!
On extremely cold nights, we’ll slip a tin hot water bottle into your futon for you.

Is it okay to cook for myself?
カンロくん

Can I use the kitchen? I’m really good at cooking!

オジィ

We don’t have an open kitchen, you know! Sorry about that. (No microwave)
Cooking outside with your own equipment is totally fine! Just be careful with the fire.

Can I bring in my own food and drinks?
サダキチさん

I’d like to have dinner and drinks with my friends at the inn…

オジィ

You may bring in your own food and drinks. There’s a refrigerator available for your use. However, eating and drinking in the bedrooms is prohibited. Sorry about that.

Can I borrow dishes and cooking utensils?
ハルさん

I’d like to drink with everyone, but I wonder if I could borrow some glasses?

オジィ

Plates and glasses are available for rent, but there is a charge. The fee is 300 yen per person.

Is there a TV and Wi-Fi?
カンロくん

Hey, I watch TV and YouTube every day!

オジィ

We do not provide these to allow you to enjoy a slower pace. (Wi-Fi is also unavailable except in emergencies.)
Sometimes, a digital detox is good for you.

Do you have any toys?
ピーちゃん

If I can’t watch TV or use my smartphone, how am I supposed to spend my time?

オジィ

We also have various card games, board games, musical instruments, and reading materials. Some items aren’t displayed, so feel free to ask!

Is it okay to smoke?
ハルさん

Is it okay to smoke?

オジィ

There are two designated smoking areas outside. Ashtrays are provided next to the entrance and on the wooden deck, so please take your time and enjoy a smoke.

Are there any shops or restaurants nearby?
サダキチさん

There doesn’t seem to be anything around the inn. How should I go about shopping?

オジィ

There are no restaurants or shops within walking distance of KUBOSHUKU, but convenience stores, supermarkets, and restaurants are located in Nirasaki city center, about a 10- to 15-minute drive away.

Tell me about Mi-nyan
カンロくん

Is it okay to pet Mi-nyan or give her a treat?

オジィ

If Mi-nyan’s in a good mood, she might let you pet her…
I don’t feed her human food! It’s too salty and strong for her. Cat food is totally fine though!
She goes outside too (she hunts!) so her claws aren’t trimmed. Be careful when playing with her!If Minyan’s in a good mood, she might let you pet her…
